Youth interest in driving cars is at its lowest in generations. But interest in putting cars in youth entertainment is at an all-time high. This summer’s Hollywood film slate is all about the automobile, with the apex being a sneak peak of a Ford concept.
Call it Fast and the Furious: The Next Generation. Sony’s Baby Driver, now in theaters, aims to make auto stunts as slick and stylish as possible. As much a music video as a movie, Baby Driver is already lighting the world of gear-heads ablaze much the same way Fast and the Furious did in 2001.

But where that bloated—and profitable—franchise came to be more about the over-the-top stunt pieces than the cars, Baby Driver is pure gasoline and rubber and music.
Audiences leaving Baby Driver are going to be wanting three things. First, the numerous sunglasses the protagonist sports throughout the film (list here) and the Subaru, Dodge and Mercedes-Benz cars he drives (while wearing those sunglasses).

Subaru doesn’t have an official tie-in with the film but local Subaru dealerships are already teasing the WRX’s star turn on social media.

The Subaru WRX seen drifting in the film should see a premium in increased interest.
And the Dodge Challenger—seen already in Fast and Furious franchise and films like Nightcrawler—will be a standout. Baby Driver’s Instragam account teased the film with a gif of the Challenger’s characteristic taillights.

The new Mercedes-Benz S 550 also makes a cameo in the movie, as teased on its Instagram feed.

Other 2017 summer box office contenders with auto co-stars include Spider-Man: Homecoming, Disney-Pixar’s Cars 3 and Transformers: The Last Knight.
Spider-Man brings Audi into the story, both offscreen and on, with the film’s young star appearing in an Audi ad and behind-the-scenes clip.
Meanwhile, the latest Transformers films returned with its Bumblebee Camaro. But it wasn’t just Chevy’s hot rod Autobot—Transformers again features a stable of high performance dream machines.
Disney-Pixar’s Cars 3 continues its tradition of featuring “based-on” models. There is now a car that looks a lot like a Tesla. Another that winks at a BMW model. The Cars gang was introduced at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show.
Meanwhile, carmakers are already goosing audiences with auto eye candy for the 2018 movie season. A recent Instagram post by megastar Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson about his 2018 film Rampage included a glimpse at the Ford Bronco concept model.

With a Lexus concept vehicle poised to be a big part of this summer’s tentpole film Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, we recently looked at the long tradition of automakers creating concept cars for Hollywood. Like the movies themselves, some were winners and others fell flat. But with Ford Bronco’s nostalgic and fiercely loyal following, it’s likely some might go see Johnson’s films as much for the car as the star.
