Taco Bell keeps reinventing itself with new menu items, new day parts and a new restaurant format in Taco Bell Cantina, which debuted in 2015 in Chicago and sells beer, wine, sangria and frozen alcoholic beverages. The urban restaurant concept is designed to be more personal and fast casual than quick-serve restaurant in feeling. The menu features appetizers designed for sharing, among other twists on a regular Taco Bell.

In addition to international expansion, the Cantina format is intended to drive growth in US markets such as Las Vegas (which can host weddings in its on-site chapel), San Francisco and Austin, Texas. Taco Bell plans to open up to 300 Cantina locations in the US by 2022, focusing on large cities like New York, Los Angeles and Boston.
Its sixth Cantina location just opened in downtown Cleveland, in the long-vacant Cadillac Ranch space in the historic May Company building. In addition to the dining room inside, there’s a patio adjacent to Public Square for al fresco dining.

“It’s a great spot within the city,” a Taco Bell spokesperson told Cleveland.com. “There’s a lot of foot traffic. We’re in a beautiful part of the city. We’re hoping that a lot of people will just top and see and wonder what’s different about this.”
The concept offers a unique customer experience to Taco Bell fans. They won’t find the typical Taco Bell design but an urban, industrial space that includes rich wood tables and chairs with high ceilings, and a large digital board that mixes video programming with customers’ social media posts (in this case, the hashtag is #TacoBellCle). Odes to Cleveland abound throughout the purple-themed decor.
What’s for dinner? Cantina serves anything you can get at a regular Taco Bell, including the chain’s relatively new breakfast items. But there are unique items designed for sharing and lingering: cheesy bacon jalapeno dippers for a relatively pricey (in Taco Bell terms) $3, mini quesadilla nachos for $4 and chili cheese-smothered potatoes for $5.
Draft beers offered at the Cleveland location include Dos Equis, Miller Lite and a local craft beer in Strongsville, Ohio-brewed Beer Kettle. In addition to the beer choices, Taco Bell Cantina offers “Twisted Freezes” – an alcoholic “slushy” beverage in a variety of flavors and mixes.
One more thing: The Cleveland location is only the second Taco Bell to sell brand-themed merchandise such as hats and shirts. Clevelanders like to wear their pride on their sleeve; now Taco Bell wants to be part of the action.
